Chromium is widely used in diversified products such as stainless steel, tool steel and alloy steel, heat and corrosion-resistant materials, special purpose alloys, alloy cast iron, pigments, metal  plating leather tanning chemicals and refractories for metallurgical furnaces.

Chromium's basic use in the metallurgical industry is to enhance such properties as hardenability, creep and impact strengths and resistance to corrosion, oxidation, wear and galling.  Chromium's major use is in stainless steel.  Stainless steel is available in a variety of compositions and structures and exhibits a wide range of mechanical properties which combined with excellent corrosion resistance makes these steels highly versatile in a multitude of consumer products.
